After achieving success in Russia, actor Yura Borisov made a splash in his English language debut as a heavy with a gentle side in Sean Baker's "Anora," a role that, as Variety noted, "earn[ed] him Oscar, SAG, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Critic's Choice and Independent Spirit Award nominations."
An international success in another hit film, Juho Kuosmanen's "Compartment Number 6" (2021), Borisov is now set to work with "Queer" director Luca Guadagnino on the Italian filmmaker's "Artificial," which is now in preproduction and which "reunites Guadagnino and Amazon MGM Studios," Variety relayed.
As previously reported, "Artificial" is a "comedic drama" involving artificial intelligence.
The prolific filmmaker has made headlines recently for all the different projects he is reportedly involved with, including a new cinematic adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' controversial 1991 novel "American Psycho," a movie version of DC comics' "Sgt. Rock," a documentary about fellow Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci, and a big-screen treatment of Pier Vittorio Tondelli's gay novel "Separate Rooms."
Guadagnino has just as many hit films already to his credit, including 2017's "Call Me By Your Name," 2018's remake of Dario Argento's "Suspiria," and last year's steamy tennis drama "Challengers." He has completed another movie, "After the Hunt," with Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, and Julia Roberts, which will hit theaters this fall. He also has some impressive small-screen credits, having directed the sizzling HBO miniseries "We Are Who We Are" (2020).
Hollywood A-listers have been mentioned in conjunction with some of Guadagnino's upcoming projects, including Austin Butler, who is rumored to be in talks for "American Psycho," and Colin Farrell, who reportedly is in consideration for the starring role in "Sgt. Rock."
If Butler turns out not to be cast in the "American Psycho" remake, there's already a queue of queer fan favorites forming for the role: Patrick Schwarzenegger has been vocal about his desire to follow up his season on "The White Lotus" with a turn as "American Psycho" central character Patrick Bateman, as has "Monsters" star Cooper Koch.
Meanwhile, Borisov, too, has been keeping busy. Variety noted that the Russian actor's projects "include Emily Mortimer's directorial debut 'The Poet' for A24, and Netflix's Russian-language adaptation of Anna Karenina, 'Anna K.'"
