The last anyone knew, openly gay 45-year-old yoga instructor Marcus Freiberger was headed to a "blind date." A month after he went missing, his body was found at a rock quarry, multiple reports say.
Freiberger, a resident of Phoenix, Arizona, was only identified through his fingerprints, AZ Family reported.
"The medical examiner's website shows his cause of death as 'pending,'" the outlet noted. "Police said the case is being handled as a death investigation."
Freiberger went missing after he "was last seen on Feb. 21 at a parking garage" in Phoenix. He was reportedly on his way to a "blind date," though reports do not specify whether that was a date arranged through friends or acquaintances who knew both parties, or if a dating app was involved. His body was found on March 19, but his identity was not confirmed until March 24.
"His sister, Tina Hall, broke the news of her brother's death on Tuesday in a heart-wrenching Facebook post," the New York Post relayed.
At the moment, more questions than specifics swirl around the tragedy. "We just want to know what happened," Freiberger's father, Rodger, told AZ Central.
"Marcus was a great kid," Rodger Freiberger added. "He was truly loved by a lot of people."
"His father had previously said his son had been between apartments when he vanished and that he had previously struggled with drugs and money issues," the Post added, though the writeup also noted that friends and family were suspicious and doubtful that Freiberger would have harmed himself because his beloved dog, Thomas, was left alone in Freiberger's apartment.
"Even if he did decide to go somewhere, he would've at least called his friend to take Thomas," Rodger said. "That makes me really think there's something more going on here, foul play of some sort."
Freiberger's life was also apparently on the upswing at the time of his disappearance. He "had recently landed a gig as an instructor at Melrose Yoga before disappearing and was an instant hit among its clientele," the Post noted.
"At the time of his disappearance, he was driving a white 2021 GMC Sierra pickup with an Arizona license plate," AZ Central reported. "It is not yet known if the vehicle has been recovered."
Added the AZ Central story: "Detectives are asking the public for help regarding the circumstances of Freiberger's disappearance and death. Witnesses are encouraged to call CrimeStop at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness if they wish to remain anonymous at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish."
