Does Ryan Look Like Ken? Does Ken Look Like Ryan? Fans 'Divided'

Initially, some were skeptical about the casting of Ryan Gosling as Ken in Greta Gerwig's upcoming "Barbie" movie. But with the movie opening next month, the tables are turned.

"Now, in a funny twist, Mattel has released a new version of the Barbie Ken doll inspired by Gosling's anticipated portrayal, and fans are divided over whether the doll is an accurate depiction of the actor," Variety reported.

Last week, the account related, Mattel – the toy company that first introduced Barbie and Ken – "unveiled the new collection of dolls based on the actors in the film, including two iterations of Gosling's Ken.

"In one, he wears a matching pink-and-green striped beach set, alongside a blue surfboard prop. In the other, he wears the viral skin-baring denim set and monogrammed underwear that Gosling wears in one of the very first photos released from the film."

That underwear caused a sensation when it was first revealed in a character poster that showed off Gosling's chiseled abs, but some fans still found fault with the actor for his "advanced" age of 42... despite the actor being 20 years younger than the doll, who was introduced 62 years ago, in 1961.

Variety noted that fans response was mixed, not only on social media, but also about the doll's page on Amazon.

While several reviews on Amazon declared satisfaction with the doll ("Loved it 100% recommend it. Beautiful doll," one shopper posted), at least one customer wasn't happy – and said as much, in a post titled, "Not happy!"

"I only bought this Ken doll because the hair is advertised as snowcat white but it is far from it," the posted review said. "And the top of his hair is super thin."

Rebutted another: "It looked better in person. There [was] some glue on his face, but that came off. Real hair . Doesn't look like actor and not typical body type but love the clothes".

On Twitter, one comment about the new Ken doll said: "That doesn't look like Ryan Gosling at all. And I know action figures. With all the digital facial scan technology out now @Mattel you really missed the mark on this one"

Others flashed back to Gosling's role in the 2007 Craig Gillespie film "Lars and the Real Girl" – about a young man in love with a sex doll – and broadened the conversation in other ways.

"Of course, if you don't buy a Ken doll you can't go wrong with Margot Robbie's Barbie, whose blown-out blonde hair, pink gingham dress and perpetually-'heeled' feet look as picture perfect as ever," Variety noted, adding that "The full collection features four iterations of Robbie, two versions of Gosling, and one each for [Simu] Liu, America Ferrera and Issa Rae, all of them donning exact outfits worn by their onscreen counterparts.

"The dolls also come with a handful of other clothes they can change into, as well as a toy replica of the car Barbie drives in the film."

"Barbie" hits theaters on July 21. Check out the trailer below.
