Summer in the Hamptons Kicks Off With Edith Windsor Benefit
Dr. William Kapfer READ TIME: 3 MIN.
Summer in the Hamptons. It has always had a posh air about it – but the truth is far more nuanced.
The area's reputation as an elegant getaway is certainly well-deserved, but visitors to this enchanting region of villages, hamlets and towns on Long Island can make their stay as low-key – or extravagant – as they like; from the cozy local inns such as The East Hampton Village Bed & Breakfast, to the extravagant hotels and restaurants like the Jean George Topping Rose.
What's more, the annual BBQ and summer party to help raise funds and awareness for "The Edie Windsor Healthcare Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital" kicked off the annual Pride Month festivities in grand style, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and all of its fabulous walks of life on Long Island's East End.
The event was hosted by Judith Kasen-Windsor, the surviving spouse of Edie Windsor, the civil rights campaigner and lead plaintiff in the 2013 Supreme Court case United States v. Windsor, which overturned Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and was considered a landmark legal victory for the same-sex marriage movement in the United States. The tradition continued this past Saturday with a host of LGBTQ+ guests and allies at the Kasen-Windsor home.
A great deal of the Hamptons' appeal stems from this mix of casual fun and big-city sophistication, set against a backdrop of breathtaking scenery. Other seaside resorts in America feature some of these qualities, but few offer all the options of the Hamptons, including this past weekend's special afternoon, where LGBTQ+ notables, and local guests and neighbors, had an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of an LGBTQ+ rights trailblazer whose landmark case granted same-sex married couples federal recognition. Guests also got to enjoy some finger-licking good BBQ, courtesy of Long Island's premier caterer, Big Bubba's BBQ.
Few activities can boast the fun of a summer barbecue in the Hamptons. The joy of cooking outside, surrounded by nature with one's friends and loved ones; it's an age-old tradition that heralds back through the centuries, and it is all the more rewarding in the Hamptons, due in part to the warm community and the celebration of this all-American tradition.
This year, treat yourself to the Hamptons, where philanthropic events, Americana, and a plethora of elegant destinations and experiences await you.
You'll never regret a trip here!
