Jzsef Szjer has resigned from his position as Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in Brussels, representing Hungary, after being caught attending a gay orgy, Business Insider reports.

Szjer admitted to having breached strict COVID-19 lockdown rules in Belgium in order to attend a sex party with 25 men, which allegedly included a number of diplomats. Police were called to the scene after "a legal complaint for night-time disturbance." Narcotics were found in a bag Szjer was carrying, but he denied having taken drugs. Szjer did not have ID on him at the time of his arrest, and was required to produce identification upon a police escort back to his residence. He said he was issued a verbal warning. On Sunday, Szjer announced his resignation.

While Szjer has expressed regret over having violated COVID-19 restrictions, he makes no mention of regret over his role in having adversely impacted the lives of LGBTQ Hungarians while indulging in a gay sex orgy. Szjer is apparently only concerned that the public treat the subject of his arrest as a matter "strictly personal" to him, and "not to extend it to my homeland, or to my political community."

The now-former MEP worked with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz party to rewrite the Hungarian constitution so as to "protect the institution of marriage as the union of a man and a woman."

Orban has suggested LGBTQ pose a threat to children. Also, last month, the government proposed a constitutional amendment that would require parents to raise their children according to Christian ideals of gender roles, according to Reuters. And in May, the country banned gender changes to personal documents – clearly targeting transgender Hungarians. Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen has said that gay people shouldn't be allowed to adopt children.
