The Return Of Swamp Thing
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 2 MIN.
It's green, slimy, and has come back for more love and dastardly deeds in the swamps. "The Return of Swamp Thing" debuts on Blu-ray in a special Collector's Edition, and the disc has a slew of supplemental features as well. This being the 30th anniversary of the cult classic, its release comes at the perfect time.
Based on the DC Comics "Swamp Thing" collection, "The Return" came out seven years after its predecessor, which featured a gloriously hammy performance from Adrienne Barbeau. Seven years can be the kiss of death for sequels, but "The Return of Swamp Thing" is so silly and harmless in nature that it hardly matters.
What does matter, if anyone cares about plot, is that Swamp Thing (Dick Durock) lives on in the swamps of Florida. When Abigail (Heather Locklear) decides to confront her stepfather (Louis Jordan) over her mother's mysterious death, she unearths a devious scheme involving the mutation of humans and swamp creatures. There wouldn't be a movie if Swamp Thing didn't come back to save the day. I'll recommend a purchase of MVD's 2K scan restoration Blu-ray if only to witness Locklear's career-defining moment for winning Worst Actress at the Razzie Awards that year.
Perhaps that's the reason why she doesn't appear (and no other actors appear for that matter) in any of the four interview segments found in the special features section on the Blu-ray. That job gets saved for the producer, writer, and various other miscellaneous crew members.
Did you also know that "Swamp Thing" is currently in development as a streaming TV series? You're welcome.
