KWN: The East London R&B Innovator Rewriting Genre Boundaries and Capturing Global Attention
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Kwn, pronounced "kay-wuhn," was born Khy Wilson in Walthamstow, East London, where she grew up immersed in a rich tapestry of sounds influenced by her Nigerian father's DJ background. Her home echoed with R&B, African music, UK Garage, and Hip-Hop, shaping her eclectic style from a young age. She also credits her music-obsessed mother and two older sisters, born in the 90s, for instilling a love of old-school R&B, jazz, and soul, which infuse her tracks with nostalgic vibes.
At 16, kwn left traditional school to attend East London Arts and Music College , a decision she describes as transformative: "That flipped everything on its head. It was a complete game changer." There, she honed skills in drums, piano, beat-making, and songwriting, evolving from early football aspirations to full commitment to music after personal loss—a close friend from her youth passed away, fueling her drive: "I gotta just stay focused, keep grindin and be the best I can be."
Her artist name originated as "k1," her initial, but shifted to "kwn" using her full initials to avoid drill rapper associations: "Everyone kept telling me it looks like I’m a drill rapper on paper." This rebrand underscores her commitment to individuality, refusing to be boxed into genres—a theme central to her music.
Released in late 2023, kwn's debut EP "Episode wn" serves as the "first episode" in a narrative series, journaling a tumultuous relationship: "From top to bottom it’s almost a chronological story and it was a mad time in my life." Tracks like "wn up," co-created with friends iO and Dyo and featuring Sasha Keable's harmonies, emerged from intensive studio camps emphasizing fun and organic creation.
Singles previewing the EP include "Wn Way or Another" and "Sweetie," the latter featuring Grammy-winner Scribz Riley and co-produced with Tendai. Kwn calls "Sweetie" "the flower amongst the tracks," capturing toxicity laced with sensuality: "No matter how hard a relationship is, you still get down to business!" Her sound—electric fluidity, textured toxicity—defies categorization, blending R&B, soulful house, garage, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and Ty Dolla $ign influences without a fixed playlist.
Kwn's process prioritizes spontaneity: "It’s not all the time that you need a foundation. Sometimes you can just go into it." She aims for listeners to simply "appreciate what I’ve done," emphasizing passion over conformity to keep music joyful.
Kwn's trajectory accelerated with her appearance in Kehlani's "worst behaviour" music video, thrusting her into online stardom and spotlighting her smooth, futuristic R&B. Spotify playlist features have further amplified her reach, recognizing her undeniable talent in her early twenties. Despite debuting her first single in 2022, her consistent grind positions her as a UK R&B force.
Kwn's music resonates within LGBTQ+ communities through its raw exploration of love's complexities, from sensuous highs to toxic lows, offering affirming narratives for queer listeners navigating relationships. Her inclusive artistry, unbound by norms, mirrors broader queer experiences of fluidity and self-definition. As she sharpens her craft amid London's nightlife energy, kwn eyes expansions like her forthcoming full-length album, promising more "slappers" while staying true to Walthamstow roots.
