State Senator Katherine M. Clark topped the ticket with 32.6 percent of the vote in the special election to replace Ed Markey in the US House of Representatives.

Openly gay state Representative Carl Sciortino finished third in the race of six Democrats with 16.1 percent.

Markey's seat in the 5th Congressional District opened when Makrey was elected to the US Senate.

Republican Frank Addivinola Jr. won his party's nomination. The final election is on December 10.

Sciortino received national attention when his campaign ad, "Father's Son," went viral. In the ad, Carl Jr. "comes out" to his father, Carl Sr., as a proud "Massachusetts liberal." Carl Sr. is a proud Tea Party member.
