Zayn Malik was having a smoke outside a club in New York City's East Village early Saturday morning when he got into a heated exchange with an unidentified man in which the pop star was called a homophobic slur, the Daily Mail reports.

The shirtless pop superstar's encounter with the man was caught on video. "Shock video footage shows the singer, 28, become visibly enraged and start swearing at the unidentified man outside Amsterdam Billiards Club in East Village," wrote the DM.

Sources close to the situation told TMZ that "Zayn was smoking a cig outside Amsterdam Billiards Club in the East Village after 2 AM when a group of guys came out of Little Sister Lounge next door and an altercation ensued."

One of the men lunged at the One Direction star and called him a homophobic slur ("fag"). At that point, Malik volleyed with some insults, which, some social media reports claim, he repeated the offensive term by saying to the man, "I'm a fag?", along with other epithets.

"Though the argument came very close to a physical confrontation, we're told no punches were ever thrown and police were not involved," TMZ added. "As for why Zayn's shirt was off ... our sources say he was wearing one at the billiards joint, but it's unclear exactly when or why he took it off."

"Zayn is in here a lot and we absolutely love having him. He was here for a few hours playing pool and ping-pong with a bunch of people, and there were no problems," one of the Amsterdam Billiards Club's owners told Page Six.

"I heard that the [scuffle] started over the guy wanting a photo, but I'm not sure. It happened outside. We gave him an Amsterdam Billiards T-shirt and are bummed he wasn't wearing it outside!" he added, laughing.

Malik's rep didn't immediately return Page Six's request for comment.
