Diver Tom Daley Wins Two Gold Medals in Competitive Return
Olympic athlete Tom Daley is back in familiar form after winning two gold medals at the 2021 FINA World Cup in Tokyo. The event was the diver's first competitive performance in 14 months, and the judges unanimously agreed that Daley didn't miss a beat, Outsports reported.
Daley won gold for an individual diving performance and gold for a synchonized diving performance with his diving partner Matty Lee.
"As soon as Daley and Lee hit the water, you could hear the World Cup announcer proclaim, 'YES! Yes yes yes yes yes! That's what they're capable of!'" Outsports reports. "You know you've done something right when you make a staid British broadcaster channel his inner Kevin McCallister."
After some months out of competitive waters, the win sent a message that Daley is still at the top of his game and is ready to compete in the summer Olympic Games.
"We haven't been able to compete for a long time, so it's been great to have this competition in the Olympic venue," Daley told the BBC. "Looking back on the two events, I think it's been a solid performance. Yes, there are some things I need to work on but overall I'm really happy."
Daley wanted his partner Dustin Lance Black and their son, Robbie, in attendance to see his diving performance, but COVID-19 restrictions prevented spectators from joining the event.
'I'd love for my son to be able to watch me at the Olympics so it's bittersweet because you never know if you're going to get to do another Olympics," Daley told Man About Town magazine, The Daily Mail reports. "And regardless of what happens in the competition in Tokyo, I know I can go home to my husband and my son and be happy and they're not going to care how I do so I can actually just go and enjoy it, which normally means you dive better because you don't have that anxiety."
