Ready Player One

Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One" is a mess, but a welcome one. It's based on the science fiction novel by Ernest Cline, about a young man who searches for an Easter Egg in a worldwide virtual reality universe that will lead him to the game creator's fortune.

For fans of Easter eggs themselves (a hidden reference or creative nod within a piece of pop culture), both the book and film version of "Ready Player One" is a treasure trove. The film alone has blatant references within nearly every scene, including a fantastic racing sequence with King Kong and a spectacular set piece set in "The Shining's" Overlook Hotel.

The film may certainly irk some with its over-referential atmosphere, but it's fun, chaotic clutter that is hugely entertaining at its best and a tad irritating at its worst. With its new 4K release, the film looks and sounds fantastic for those with 4K capabilities. The Blu-ray, as well, is remarkably rich in detail.

Bonus features on the 4K Ultra HD release include featurettes such as:

• Game Changer: Cracking the Code (57 minutes)
• Effects for a Brave New World (25 min)
• Ernie & Tye's Excellent Adventure (12 min)
• High Score: Endgame (10 min)
• Level Up: Sound for the Future (8 min)
• The '80s: You're the Inspiration (6 min)
