"Our Farm" Benefit in Brooklyn
Brooklyn, NY - On Sunday, January 16 from 4-6 pm Cynthia King Dance Studio (CKDS) of Brooklyn, New York will be hosting "A Children's Celebration of Farm Animals" to benefit national farm animal rescue and advocacy nonprofit organization Farm Sanctuary (www.farmsanctuary.org).
The event is to feature a reading and signing of the children's book Our Farm: By the Animals of Farm Sanctuary (Knopf; www.ourfarmbook.com) by author Maya Gottfried, as well as interactive dance and music for children by studio owner/director Cynthia King and musician/educator Michael Harren. All of the studio's proceeds from book sales will be donated to Farm Sanctuary.
Long-time Brooklyn resident and animal advocate Cynthia King is deeply involved in neighborhood and New York City activism and political communities. In addition to serving on the board of directors for Vote Humane (formerly New York League of Humane Voters), she is an active supporter of animal protection groups, community youth interest organizations, and various local political campaigns.
Lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals
In its ninth year, CKDS has a strong local presence with a focus on teaching children ballet, modern, tap, jazz, hip hop and b-boy forms of dance. CKDS’ students also frequently perform at local civic and arts events.
Cynthia King, an animal activist since 1967, is the only US-based maker of vegan ballet slippers. As vegan actress Natalie Portman recently made the publicity rounds for her new movie Black Swan, so did Cynthia King Vegan Ballet Slippers! Both Vogue and Entertainment Weekly requested the cruelty-free dance shoes for the star’s photo shoots.
Our Farm: By the Animals of Farm Sanctuary (Knopf) takes a loving look at the residents of Farm Sanctuary’s two shelters in Orland, CA and Watkins Glen, NY in the form of poems told from the animals’ perspectives, accompanied by beautiful watercolor portraits.
Farm Sanctuary is the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, Farm Sanctuary has worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the "food animal" industry through research and investigations, legal and institutional reforms, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts.
Farm Sanctuary shelters in Watkins Glen, N.Y., and Orland, Calif., provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming.
