A Diamond In The Mind
Screaming fans. A danceable blend of samples and strong musicianship. Thirty years of music. These are the elements on display during a Duran Duran concert in the 21st century, and the band still puts together a highly entertaining evening that encompasses hits from their fledging days as MTV darlings to cuts from their latest release, "All You Need Is Now."
When the group burst on to the music scene in the early 1980's, MTV embraced them; that event pretty much decimated their opportunity to show the world that they were actually good musicians, not just objects of desire. Fortunately, they've outlasted their videos and are still crafting engaging dance rock music to this day.
The band is anchored by the trio of vocalist Simon LeBon, bassist John Taylor, and keyboardist Nick Rhodes; their new live release,"A Diamond in the Mind," also features original drummer Roger Taylor and new guitarist Dom Brown. This 14-song set, recorded last December at Manchester's MEN Arena, includes a well-balanced performance from the Durans' hit-filled catalog, featuring hits like "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Rio," and the James Bond hit "A View to a Kill," plus some of their more recent releases including "Before the Rain" and the "Blame the Machines." The medley of their hit, "Wild Boys" with a cover of the Frankie Goes To Hollywood classic "Relax" will take anyone who was alive during the 1984 dance club scene gleefully back in time.
After suffering vocal problems earlier in 2011, LeBon is back in strong voice, with a maturity born of not having to please record executives. Rhodes and John Taylor continue to provide a solid soundscape, along with the eye-candy that has kept their less musical fans flocking to their concerts over the past three decades.
Plenty of audience participation, along with great variation in the band's arrangements, warrants purchasing this release even if you own the original recordings.
