Drop Dead Diva - The Complete Fourth Season

Is the television/digital viewer ready for an hour-long show that manages to combine a zeroed-out soul in transition with an "I Dream of Jeannie" quality or a simply bewitching plot structure? You bet.

"Drop Dead Diva" has been, and continues to be, the show to go to if the compromises between life and death (or modeling and law) present an everyday conundrum. The "hit" show is now in its fifth season, beginning June 23 on Lifetime Network. Viewers can tune in at their own leisure from the start to the finish of the fourth season's 13 episodes with this new DVD release.

This combination of fantasy, comedy, and drama, follows the adventures of a deceased model, Deb, who finds herself reincarnated in the body of a Rubenesque female lawyer named Jane (Brooke Elliott). Though the series is set on the metaphysical fringe of the law and order genre, it boasts a solid cast; "Drop Dead Diva"'s team acting contingent are far more funny than half the other so-called sitcoms out there. The show knows to not go "overboard," but also has sense enough to embrace the relationships posited by its fantastical premise; there's genuine warmth between Jane and the people in her life -- some of whom, such as guardian angel Paul (Justin Deely), only she can see.

Don't take anything too seriously and go with the flow... that's what comedies such as these do best. Brooke Elliott's acting chops raise the bar, while Margaret Cho holds down the fort as Jane's assistant, Teri.
